Raise high the Liberty Pole in Mystic

Jamie Vandal, left, and Brett Huber of Central Construction Industries of Putnam steady the top as a crane begins to lift the new flagpole, a downtown landmark, into place Wednesday at Main and Holmes streets in Mystic. The 113-foot Liberty Pole, as it is traditionally called, is made of fiberglass.

The original Liberty Pole was placed on what is today the Groton side of Mystic on May 17, 1862. It was moved to its present location in October 1886. The pole has been replaced several times since then: both lower mast and top mast were replaced in 1904; the top mast was replaced in 1938 Hurricane; major refurbishments were required in 1976; and the lower mast was replaced in 1986.

Brett Huber of Central Construction Industries in Putnam checks to make sure the new Liberty Pole, a downtown landmark, is plumb, as a crane lowers it onto its base Wednesday at Main and Holmes streets.
