Child rape suspect arrested in Groton

A 25-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl was located in Groton early today and placed under arrest, according to Clinton police.

Timothy Vanderwood, whose address is unknown, was charged with first-degree sexual assault, fourth-degree sexual assault and two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Clinton police said they were able to secure an arrest warrant in the case after learning that Vanderwood, upon hearing that he was under investigation, had made statements that he was attempting to flee the state. He was arrested without incident.

Details of the alleged crime and the victim's condition are unavailable. Vanderwood is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond and will be presented Monday in Superior Court in Middletown.
