Wrong-way driver dies in East Lyme crash

East Lyme — An Old Lyme woman was killed early this morning when state police said she was driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 and crashed into a tractor trailer.

State police at Troop E said they received numerous calls reporting that a wrong-way driver was traveling south in the northbound lane of Interstate 395.

The car continued south and onto Interstate 95 south in the northbound lane. The car, driven by 60-year-old Bonnie Buratti, struck a tractor trailer between exits 74 and 75. The accident happened around 2:20 a.m.

Anthony Parisi, of Smithtown, N.Y., told police he stopped the tractor trailer as he saw Buratti drive towards him.

Police said the crash occurred in the left lane within a construction zone.

Parisi was not injured in the crash. Buratti was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The accident remains under investigation.
