UPDATED: Niantic man charged with taking car

Montville - Police arrested a Niantic man early Sunday after they found him hiding in the woods after allegedly taking a car in East Lyme.

Matthew Kelly, 39, of no known address, was charged with driving with a suspended license, improper parking, criminal impersonation and interfering with an officer.

Editor's note: Kelly does not live at 215 Main St. (the former Morton House), Apt. 119, Niantic, as previously reported, according to one of the managers there.

State police said that on Route 82, Montville police found a hazardous abandoned motor vehicle, which was reportedly taken without permission from East Lyme. They said there was also a warrant for Kelly's arrest for first-degree escape.

A State Police K-9 team found him hiding in the woods nearby.

According to the Department of Correction, Kelly was sentenced April 19, 2010 to three years in prison for third-degree burglary and first-degree failure to appear in court.

Kelly was placed in a community-release program at the Connecticut Renaissance in Waterbury in February. He left the facility and never returned on May 20, the DOC said.

He is being held on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned today in Norwich Superior Court.
