State hands out stem cell grants

Stem cell researchers from across Connecticut received $9.8 million in grants during the latest round of state funding announced Monday.

"The research projects funded by these grants allow scientists to do revolutionary work that puts Connecticut at the forefront of bioscience industry," Gov. Dannel P.Malloy said in a statement.

The 19 research awards ranged from $200,000 to $1.8 million. Most of the winning applicants, chosen out of a pool of 88, were associated with Yale University or the University of Connecticut. The state's Stem Cell Research Advisory Committee awarded the grants, which have totaled nearly $70 million in the past seven years.
