Westbrook High School celebrated its 52nd Commencement Ceremony on June 18, with the 76 students in the Class of 2012, according to school tradition, escorted into the ceremony by a member of the faculty. Faculty and administrators from the elementary, middle, and high schools participated in the ceremony, recognizing the contributions at all levels to the success of graduating students.

Class President Matthew Tweedie delivered the welcoming message. Other student speakers included Valedictorian Olivia Tempesta and Salutatorian Sarah Luft. Tweedie will attend Southern Connecticut State University to study athletic training. Both girls will attend the University of Connecticut in the fall, Tempesta to study music education and Luft to major in sociology. Their speech titles were, respectively, "The Small-town Paradox" and "Our Perceptions."

Principal Robert Hale, Superintendent of Schools Patricia Charles, and Board of Education Chair Maureen Westbrook also shared remarks and presented the graduates with their diplomas.
Students have earned more than $250,000 in scholarships, counting both previously announced scholarships as well as those that were presented for the first time at the commencement. Principal Hale as well as representatives of community organizations presented more than $100,000 to students for the first time that evening. Of those, more than $63,000 is administered through the Westbrook Foundation and presented by foundation board members Joann Murray and Jim Crawford.

The class of 76 included 29 members of the National Honor Society, as well as more than a third graduating with honors distinction. Students in the National Honor Society are designated by wearing gold cords and students with honors distinction receive and wear a school medal as part of the commencement regalia. Students also wore honor cords in a variety of colors representing departmental and school-wide honors. Graduating students who scored at or above goal on statewide testing wore blue honor cords.
