Hartford - The Parent Leadership Training Institute, a family civics program, held a graduation ceremony Wednesday at the Legislative Office Building for students from throughout the state. For 20 years, the PLTI has trained more than 2,500 parents, grandparents, foster parents, guardians and other caring adults through a 20-week democracy school, which teaches the skills needed to become strong and effective voices for their children.
The graduation also included students from a sister program, Parent Supporting Educational Excellence. In all, 257 students graduated from both programs.
Graduates have joined parent-teacher organizations, school governance councils, state advisory boards, city councils and the state legislature. Participants received a legislative citation after devoting more than 100 hours to training and completing individual community projects.
Local graduates are: Michelle Allen, Tara Bernoudy, Beloved Grace Carter, Mongi Dhaouadi, Morell Johnson, Mirna Lis Martinez, Aleida Milan, Corinna Nedzel, Rev. Herman Pollard, Karina Sanchez, Kelsey Wolfe and Joane Woodhall.
