Community Foundation gives $300,000 in scholarships

New London - The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut announced Thursday the award of more than $300,000 in scholarships to students from throughout the region.

The foundation said this year's award of $312,250 exceeds the previous cycle's distribution amount by about 10 percent. The awards to more than 170 people - out of a pool of more than 300 high school and college students - come from 80 scholarship funds set up by families, businesses and individuals.

Awards ranged from $500 to $12,000. Included were $15,000 in funds made available to financial-aid students attending Mitchell College.

New London students outpaced those from other towns with 32 scholarship recipients. Other top towns were Montville, 27; Stonington, 25; Groton, 22; and Waterford, 14.

"The generosity of local donors has enabled thousands of young people to realize their dreams over nearly 30 years," said Alice Fitzpatrick, president of the foundation, in a statement.

Most of the scholarship funds are set up in perpetuity, allowing them to continue helping local students well into the future. The next deadline to apply for scholarships is April 1, 2013, and guidelines will be posted by January at www.cfect.org.

Mary Seider, a foundation trustee who headed a seven-member review committee, said many students represented the first generation of their family to attend college.

"Each scholarship has its own selection criteria which may include town of residence, high school, field of study and other preferences," according to an online description of the foundation's scholarship programs. "Recipients must attend or plan to attend accredited educational institutions."

Four new scholarship funds this year and the recipients:

Matthew Chew Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Arts, Ryley Alger-Hempstead of Groton; Ruben Elijah Reiser Johnson Memorial Scholarship, Kayla Williams of New London; Dr. James T. Anderson Scholarship, Alyssa Dubicki, a Windham High School graduate; Laura B. Seder Memorial Scholarship, Devon York, a Norwich Free Academy graduate.
