'Endless accomplishments' at Fitch
Groton - Men in black, ladies in red. It was neither a hit movie nor a love song. It was a procession of more than 300 students that took to the stage Friday night to receive their diplomas at the 82nd commencement ceremony at Robert E. Fitch High School.
Jordan Battle was among dozens of seniors who kept a cellphone close at hand to keep track of family and friends as the group waited to march into Hagerty Auditorium, where the ceremony was held. The threat of bad weather dashed plans to hold commencement on the football field.
Battle plans to keep his landscaping job on Fishers Island at least long enough to pay for his car and then to enter a nursing program at Three Rivers Community College.
Davon Cole, 18, was as excited about the aftermath of the graduation as he was about the ceremony.
"Let's go," he shouted, unable to contain himself. "I've got things to do."
There was a family barbecue planned for later in the evening.
"I'm not nervous. I'm ready for this," Cole said.
Ben Dinovelli got mail. Valedictorian Randall Fitzmorris ran down the line and handed Dinovelli a postmarked envelope.
"I don't know what it is. It's a surprise to me," Dinovelli said, before pulling a stack of papers from the already opened package. "Oh, it's the scores from our last debate team match."
Dinovelli, who will attend Princeton University in the fall and aspires to work as a lawyer and politician, took a minute to reflect on the evening.
"It's still sort of weird to think high school is over. I guess I am pretty excited," he said.
Fitzmorris addressed friends and family during the ceremony, calling his time at Fitch "an awesome four years."
"What other school offers camping on the football field, a full day off from school and a two week vacation before graduation?" he said. Classes ended June 15, and some seniors were finished a few days earlier.
"But then again," Fitzmorris said, "how many schools are one of Newsweek's Top Schools in America, have a Martin Luther King Scholarship winner, or their own weatherman? The accomplishments here are endless."
