If anyone should have been a fan of this movie, it would have been me. I love '80s music (don't judge). I love musicals. I love camp comedies. Imagine my chagrin when I was bored silly by "Rock of Ages." Director Adam Shankman seems to have no control over the proceedings - the pace or the performances, the ability to find humor in the dialogue or exuberance in the production numbers. Tom Cruise is woefully miscast as a would-be Axl Rose. The actors playing the young lovers - Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta - have pretty faces and flat personalities. Thank goodness for Russell Brand, who brings a saucy spirit (and some amusing, presumably improvised lines) to his role a rock-club co-owner.
