Sparklers, only sparklers, legal in Connecticut

State Police and the State Fire Marshal are reminding Connecticut residents that the only legal firework items are sparklers.

Police said that the public has been overwhelmed with advertisements, signs and sales pitches for fireworks and that the July 4th holiday raises questions about what is legal as far as fireworks are considered.

Citing state law, police said only sparklers are legal in Connecticut. Sparklers are non-explosive, non-aerial devices that contain less than 100 grams of pyrotechnic mixture, according to state law.

Sparklers can only be legally used in Connecticut by someone who is age 16 or older.

Party poppers, snakes, smoke devices and anything that emits a flame are not legal for private use in Connecticut, police said.

“The danger that exists with these types of incidents (house fires and grass fires), besides damage to property is the endangerment to human life,” State Fire Marshal Rob Ross said in a press release. “If a fire or explosion of any type causes damage or destruction, the intentional starting of that fire or intentionally causing that explosion could be designated as an arson which is a class C felony.”
