Connecticut principal charged with pocketing snack money

Waterbury (AP) — A former elementary school principal, who resigned last year amid a cheating scandal, has been charged with larceny in an alleged snack-selling scheme.

The Republican-American reports 52-year old Maria Moulthrop was arrested Thursday and accused of pocketing more than $10,000 from snacks and slushy drinks sold to students at the Hopeville Elementary School in Waterbury.

Police say Moulthrop, a summer resident of Niantic, used the money to buy everything from meals to a television.

Police say they seized a Slushy machine from the school in their investigation.

Authorities say an audit found the school sold more than $120,000 in unauthorized sugary snacks.

Moulthrop resigned last December after an investigation found cheating on school's Mastery Test scores.

An attempt to reach her by phone Friday was unsuccessful, and her voice mailbox was not accepting messages.
