The U.S. Coast Guard Band give a concert at Fort Trumbull

The river provides a backdrop at Fort Trumbull.

If you've seen the U.S. Coast Guard Band perform a free concert outdoors at Fort Trumbull State Park, with a sweeping view of the Thames River, on a lovely Labor Day weekend, you could have found yourself thinking it couldn't get any better.

Well, it has gotten better. On Saturday, you'll get all that PLUS you'll see some majestic ships docked at Fort Trumbull for OpSail ... and the concert will segue into the Mashantucket Pequot Fireworks Extravaganza.

The show will include patriotic numbers and seafaring tunes, along with Sousa marches and a set by the Coast Guard Dixieland Band. Percussionist Musician First Class Christopher Smith solos on "The Golden Age of the Xylophone," and soprano Musician First Class Megan Weikleenget sings "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "America the Beautiful."

    - KRISTINA DORSEY

The U.S. Coast Guard Band, 7 p.m. Saturday, Fort Trumbull State Park, 90 Walbach St., New London; free; (860) 701-6826, uscg.mil/band.
