Groton – Groton Long Point police are warning residents to keep their property and belongings secure after they arrested two men Friday afternoon who were allegedly attempting to steal electrical wire and metal.

Police said Robert J. Brierley, 24, of Enfield, and William J. Kreiger, 42, of 30 Palmer Ave., Apt. 9, Jewett City, were trying to steal electrical wire and metal worth about $50. Police charged the two with attempted sixth-degree larceny and simple trespass after spotting a suspiciously parked vehicle in front of 21 Beach Road.

Each man was held on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear July 27 in New London Superior Court.

Thieves are targeting items such as metal lawn chairs and bicycles because they're portable, easy to access and easy to sell to scrap metal recyclers, police said. Anyone with information on similar thefts is asked to call police at (860) 536-4921.
