Joseph J. Schmitt, 103, of Northford, died on July 14. Joe was born on Oct. 30, 1908 in Jersey City Heights, New Jersey, son of the late John and Anna (Mesco) Schmitt. He was the husband of the late Gertrude A. (Stein) Schmitt, who predeceased him in 1987. He married Gertrude Stein in 1935, and they lived in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where they had one son. They then moved to Riverdale, New Jersey, until 1956, when they moved to Northford. Joe had worked at Star Electric Company for 20 years until it was purchased by Safety Electric in Hamden, formerly Safety Car Heating and Light Company, as an electric motor winding technician, then later as assistant supervisor. He retired in 1974.
Joe liked music and had played a violin in his younger years and, up until last year, had played a banjo mandolin. He also liked working out in the yard.
He is survived by his brother John J. Schmitt of Toms River, New Jersey; his son Daniel P. Schmitt and daughter-in-law Janet (Christoforo) Schmitt and granddaughter Danielle J. Schmitt, all of Northford; and his stepson Nathan Shaffer and his wife Linn (Marlen Rognmo) and step-great-granddaughter Mia, all of Meriden.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven, on Wednesday, July 18, at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Monica Church at 10 a.m., followed by burial in All Saints Cemetery. The visiting hours will be Tuesday, July 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. www.northhavenfuneral.com
