Fatal accident under investigation on I-395

Norwich - One person died and another was injured Saturday morning in a crash involving two cars on Interstate 395 North, north of Exit 80.

Marcia Pluff, 52, of Springfield, Mass., was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. She was sitting on the passenger seat of a car being driven by Paul Pluff, 52, of the same address, according to the police report.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at 10:17 a.m. for a report of a rollover with a car into the woods and an ejection near the Cranberry Road overpass.

The accident occurred when a car that Daniel Humbert, 19, of 155 Lebanon Road, Franklin, was driving made contact with Pluff's car. Humbert, who was on the left lane, crossed over to the right lane and came to a rest on the breakdown lane, police said. Pluff drove across the right shoulder and onto a graded embankment, where his car hit a tree and became airborne.

While airborne, Pluff's car hit another tree, and Marcia Pluff was ejected from the vehicle, police said.

Paul Pluff was taken by American Ambulance to The William W. Backus Hospital, where he was treated and released, according to the hospital.

The right lane of the highway remained closed for several hours as state police reconstructed the accident. I-395 North is now open.

The investigation remains open.
