Catholic church has lost moral high ground

There comes a time in life when you need to just shut up. Recently, the latest report on Jerry Sandusky and Penn State coincided with the arrest of another Catholic priest for child pornography. Around that time a Catholic letter writer attacked President Obama in The Day accusing him of stifling the free exercise of religion. This is nonsense. The writer is miffed over a law that prohibits organizations (not just religious) who offer health insurance as part of employment from denying women access to health care benefits selectively.

Here is the real rub, the writer based his arguments on morality. Excuse me? The Catholic Church ran the biggest criminal syndicate of pedophiles in the history of this country. And after the recent arrest, a church spokesman brazenly said the church is "the model institution for protecting kids." What a disgusting and insensitive remark to all of the church's victims. The sheer magnitude of the crimes covered up and nurtured by the church is staggering.

That the church could ever make amends for this horrific display of immorality is doubtful. But today, it has no right to take the moral high ground about anything.
