The Board of Education, in a special meeting July 20, appointed assistant principals for the Brown Middle School and Polson Middle School. Both come from outside the district.

Superintendent of Schools Thomas Scarice announced the appointments July 23. Rebecca Roy was appointed assistant principal at the Dr. Robert H. Brown School, which teaches students in grades 5 and 6. Rebecca Frost was appointed assistant principal at the Walter C. Polson Middle School, which teaches students in grades 7 and 8.

Roy replaces Kathryn Hart who was recently named principal at the J. Milton Jeffrey Elementary School. Frost will replace Jill Hale, who left the district to assume a position as principal at the Guilford Lakes Elementary School. Both Roy and Frost will be joining the Madison Public Schools on Monday, Aug. 6, Scarice said.

Roy has worked for the past seven years as a health teacher, team leader, and department coordinator at the Irving A. Robbins Middle School in Farmington. She also served as an administrative intern during the 2011-2012 school year. She received her undergraduate degree in exercise science from Southern Connecticut State University. She earned her master's degree in health education and a 6th-year degree in educational leadership also from Southern Connecticut State University.

Frost has worked for the past six years at the Highland Elementary School in Cheshire, where she has been a 3rd grade teacher. Frost also served as an administrator intern for the Cheshire Public Schools during the 2010-2011 school year. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Quinnipiac University. She earned her master's degree in elementary education and a 6th-year degree in educational leadership, also from Quinnipiac University.

Scarice said the school board received more than 130 applications for the two posted assistant principal positions. Both candidates participated in a rigorous three-level interview process with the district "during which Ms. Roy and Mrs. Frost excelled. They will be welcome new additions to the district's administrative team."

The superintendent said, when making the announcement July 23, "Roy and Frost are looking forward to the opportunity to move into administrative roles with the Madison public schools and support the administration and staff in continuing the high level of student learning and achievement at the middle school level. Brown School Principal Julie Phelps and Polson School Principal Frank Henderson are both thrilled to have persons of Roy's and Frost's caliber joining their schools as new leadership teammates."
