Police investigate rocks thrown at historical society offices

New London — Police are looking into who may have thrown rocks through two windows at the historic Shaw Mansion, one overnight and one Tuesday afternoon.

Edward Baker, executive director of the New London County Historical Society, which has offices in the building, said he arrived at work Tuesday morning to find a broken kitchen window. He contacted police and filed a report.

Hours later, at about 1:30 p.m., when he was in another room of the house, he heard a crash and discovered a second window had been broken; a rock had been tossed through the window of the conference/education room. No one was in the room at the time.

Baker said it was clear the rocks were picked up from the garden surrounding the house.

“It’s kind of disconcerting,’’ he said. “It’s the middle of the afternoon and someone is standing next to the firehouse and throwing rocks at our windows in broad daylight.”

Police will be making extra patrols in the area, Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard said.

The Shaw Mansion, which was built in 1758, is at 11 Blinman St., next to Fire Headquarters on Bank Street.
