Jeff Larson, who led New London High School to three straight football playoff appearances, has accepted a job as an assistant principal at Classical Magnet in Hartford.
Larson begins his new job Aug. 6.
"This was a very, very difficult decision," Larson said Wednesday. "I'm going to miss the kids. The assistant coaches. Friday nights. The absolute, utter support of the community. But at the same time, it's a chance to move closer to my family and take the next step professionally."
Larson coached and taught at New London for three years, leading the Whalers to a 29-5 record in three seasons with three straight trips to the state playoffs. New London made it as far as the Class M championship game in 2010, losing to Hillhouse of New Haven.
School officials will determine the program's new coach in the coming weeks.
