Governor's proclamation on marshal's last day

Gov. Dannel Malloy has declared Wednesday “John Hanrahan Day” in honor of the judicial marshal who is retirning today after 24 years of service with the state.

Superior Court Judge Kevin P. McMahon read the Governor’s proclamation from the bench Tuesday morning at the Broad Street Courthouse in New London. The entire assembly erupted into applause.

Hanrahan, 46, is well-regarded by his co-workers, who were saddened to learn he has been diagnosed with a form of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and is leaving his job at the recommendation of his doctor. Throughout the day, people stopped to shake Hanrahan’s hand and wish him well.

His colleagues are holding a dinner and raffle in Hanrahan’s honor on Wednesday and have established a fund to help defray his unreimbursed medical expenses. Donations to the fund may be sent, in check form, to Friends of John Hanrahan, c/o People’s United Bank, 248 Flanders Road, Niantic 06357.
