QB Nebrich leaves UConn football team

Published August 09. 2012 4:00AM

Mike Nebrich, a true sophomore quarterback from Burke, Va., left the UConn football program on Wednesday and will transfer to another school.

The 5-foot-11, 208-pound Nebrich was No. 2 on the depth chart behind junior college transfer Chandler Whitmer when the Huskies opening training camp last Friday.

Senior Johnny McEntee, the 2011 starter, will assume the backup role because the Huskies are missing two other QBs right now - redshirt sophomore Scott McCummings (excused by head coach Paul Pasqualoni for personal reasons) and true freshman Casey Cochran, who is out recovering from a broken left wrist.

Nebrich played sparingly in eight games last season, passing for 69 yards, including 60 in a season-opening win over Fordham. Ironically, there were reports Wednesday indicating the Nebrich was considering Fordham, a FCS school (formerly Division I-AA) that is now being lead by Joe Moorhead, UConn's quarterbacks coach in 2001.

If Nebrich transfers Fordham or any FCS program, he would be eligible immediately, but if he decides on another FBS school, he would have to sit out a year.

Nebrich told the Hartford Courant on Wednesday, "... for me the most important factor in this decision will be going someplace where I'm going to be happy doing what I'm doing - doesn't matter what level it's at."
