2ND CASE OF WEST NILE CONFIRMED

Hartford - Connecticut health officials say the state's second case of West Nile virus this summer has been confirmed in a Stamford resident. The state health department said Friday the person in his or her 60s became ill the third week in July and remains hospitalized but is improving. The department announced Thursday that a New Haven resident in his or her 30s was the first confirmed human West Nile case and has been released from the hospital. That person became ill the first week in August. Last year there were nine reported West Nile cases in the state. Officials say mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus have been found in 40 towns across Connecticut his summer. Health officials recommend using insect repellent and draining standing water, where mosquitoes breed.
