The writer of a recent letter "Courtney has himself to blame" (Aug. 12) wants to blame the entirety of our nation's debt on Congressman Joe Courtney. That could not be further from the truth. Courtney has long said we must address the debt, but that the real question is how to do so.
If you want to look for the root causes of our nation's debt issues, simply look at the policies put in place before Courtney took office that gave massive tax cuts to millionaires: the policies that were applauded and approved by Republicans in Congress and the prior president, without a thought to paying for them through offsets in spending. The result: massive debt for our country. Courtney is in favor of lowering the debt immediately by allowing these tax breaks for incomes above $250,000 to expire, thus saving our country nearly $1 trillion in the next decade.
We cannot simply address the debt by enacting deep spending cuts, without simultaneously eliminating debt-busting tax breaks for those who need them the least. Anyone who supports such an approach ought to take a long, hard look in the mirror.
