Building permits surge in July

The number of building permits issued in Connecticut last month rose nearly 50 percent from the numbers seen in the same period last year.

According to the latest statistics from the state Department of Economic and Community Development, 375 permits for new housing units were issued in July, compared with 258 in the same month last year.

Year to date, permits hit 2,092 compared with 1,508 at this time last year. That's an increase of nearly 39 percent.

Local municipalities with the largest number of permits issued this year were East Lyme, with 24; Stonington, 22; New London, 18, and Ledyard, 13.
