Stonington — A two-car crash that closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Stonington for two hours Wednesday evening was caused when a driver who allegedly was using a handheld device attempted to shift from the left to the right lane and hit a second vehicle, state police in Montville said Thursday.

Police said Lacey Bolton of Westerly was traveling southbound in a Mercury sedan when she attempted to move into the right lane at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Bolton hit a Chrysler van driven by Lynne Russell of Warwick, R.I., who was in that lane, police said.

The sedan swerved off the roadway and down the median embankment. The van rolled onto the driver's side and stopped in the right shoulder, trapping Russell inside, police said.

Police said Russell was transported by Life Star helicopter to The William W. Backus Hospital with head and neck injuries that were deemed not to be life-threatening, but hospital officials had no record of her coming there.

Police said Bolton was transported to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital with facial and head lacerations. Her injuries were also deemed to not be life-threatening. A hospital spokesman said Bolton was released Thursday.

Police issued Bolton infractions for improper use of a handheld device and failure to maintain the proper lane.
