New London - Police are looking for a man who fired numerous shots about 2 a.m. Saturday near State and Washington streets.

Police said they responded to the area after receiving a report of a man who had just fired a silver handgun.

Officers who were on a bar closing detail nearby heard the sound of rapid fire gunshots coming from the area just before police received 911 calls from witnesses and immediately responded to the scene, police said.

Witnesses described a black male wearing a white t-shirt and tan pants firing the handgun and then running away.

Police were unsuccessful in finding the man. Police found numerous spent handgun shell casings on the street.

Anyone who has information about the incident or may have witnessed it is asked to contact detectives at (860)447-1481.
