Staten Island, N.Y. - The Connecticut Tigers failed to protect a 2-0 lead, falling to the Staten Island Yankees 4-2 in a New York-Penn League baseball game Tuesday night.
The teams finish the three-game series and complete their seasons today in a game at 7 p.m. The Tigers won 11-5 Monday night.
The Tigers (35-39) scored twice in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead when Bennett Pickar and Jared Reaves both scored on a wild pitch by Gabriel Encinas of the Yankees. Tyler Hanover and Patrick Smith had two hits each for the Tigers.
The Yankees (29-45) scored a run in the sixth, and ook a 3-1 lead on a two-run homer by Greg Bird in the seventh. Bird's RBI single in the eighth closed out the scoring.
• Twin sisters Kayla Lynch and Bridget Lynch each scored a goal leading Lasell to a 2-0 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game, the home opener for the Bears.
Kayla Lynch scored the only goal in the first half in the 26th minute when she headed home a ball off a cross from junior Jamie Osterberg for the 1-0 lead. Bridget Lynch closed the scoring in the 82nd minute with senior Reegan Brackett assisting for the Lasers, who improve to 2-1 on the season.
Leah Pappalardo made nine saves for Lasell and junior Devin Fellman made ten saves for Coast Guard. The Bears (0-2) had their best opportunity with 15:31 left in the game when senior Judy Hooymans' shot went off the crossbar.
• Mitchell College's Frank Williams was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week.
Williams, a sophomore from Westerly, scored the game-winning goal just 15 minutes into Mitchell's season opener at Anna Maria College Saturday. The unassisted goal led the Mariners to a 3-0 victory. It marked his sixth career goal and his third game winner.
Williams played in 16 games last season as a freshman and made 14 starts. He finished his rookie campaign as the team's second-leading scorer with five goals and one assist for 11 points.
Mitchell's home game against Johnson & Wales Tuesday was postponed by rain. No makeup date was announced.
