Former Stonington resident gets eight years for attempted abduction

Wakefield — A former Stonington resident was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in prison in Washington County Superior Court in connection with the attempted abduction of a 20-year-old woman while she was jogging in Narragansett, R.I. last October.

Matthew Klotz, 28, pleaded no contest to kidnapping, carrying a firearm and stalking. In the kidnapping case, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison suspended after eight years served. In the firearms charge, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison suspended after eight years. Both sentences will run concurrently, court records show.

In the stalking charge, he was sentenced to a suspended three year prison term.

Once he is released from prison, he will be placed on 12 years of probation.

He was also ordered to pay a $1,270 in court cost.

After his October arrest, a Rhode Island judge ordered Klotz to leave his mother's Lords Point home in Stonington after he violated the terms of his release in connection with the attempted kidnapping of the 20-year-old jogger.

At the time, some Lords Point residents said they were concerned that he was back in their neighborhood not just because he is accused of trying to abduct the female jogger with a gun but because in 2000 he broke into the home of an elderly woman on Lords Point.

In 2000 Stonington police said the then 16-year-old Klotz broke into the home of an 88-year-old neighbor in the middle of the night and tried to sexually assault her.

While Klotz maintained he never tried to sexually assault the elderly woman, he pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary and received a suspended seven-year prison term and four years probation.
