Publication: The Day
On Sept. 18 New London voters will decide on two budget issues. One is to accept or reject the proposed budget and the second is to approve the property tax hike to fund that budget. It is important for all voters to vote "no." This budget has not even been made available to the City Council for proper review and the tax increase is unsustainable. This vote has no bearing on the school budget which is separate from the city's.
The net affect of allowing the first question to pass is to agree to something that even the finance department doesn't understand or can explain. The impact of allowing the second question to pass is to have home owners driven out of the city, buyers avoid the city, and rents to go up while the ability to collect those rents goes down.
This is a losing budget and tax increase for all residents.
Until the city can fully explain to the voters what is wrong there is no justification for a tax increase. So far they can't. It is their job to do so.
