Stonington — Cats are still allowed at the town’s animal control facility on Greenhaven Road.

During a Board of Selectmen meeting last week, Pawcatuck resident Fran O’Neill asked why the renovated animal control facility on Greenhaven Road was no longer taking in cats, especially since it was designed to accommodate cats. She said she now was going to donate cat food to the Westerly shelter.

But police Captain Jerry Desmond said the shelter is still accepting cats, just not feral ones which he said there are many of in town.

“Reviewing the budget and activity of the ACO we found they were spending a significant amount of time on feral cats,” he said, in addition to veterinary bills.

Desmond said the shelter will still house domestic cats and the ACO will make decisions on a case-by-case basis.
