The state is preparing to bring a second man to trial for the May 15, 2004, beating death of scientist Eugene Mallove in Norwich.

Prosecutor Paul J. Narducci said Monday that he is reviewing transcripts from this spring's trial of Chad M. Schaffer as he prepares for the trial of Schaffer's cousin and codefendant, Mozzelle Brown.

Brown, 38, is serving a 15-year sentence in federal prison for drug and weapon charges. He is accused of taking part in the Mallove homicide but has not been served with an arrest warrant.

Mallove, 56, of New Hampshire, was fatally beaten in the driveway of his childhood home at 119 Salem Turnpike in Norwich. He was cleaning out the home, which his mother owned, after having evicted Schaffer's parents a month earlier.

Schaffer, Brown and Schaffer's girlfriend, Candace Foster, were charged in 2010, after the state had dismissed charges against two other men who had initially been charged.

Schaffer, 34, took his case to trial in April. After several days of testimony Narducci offered Schaffer the opportunity to plead guilty to the lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter in exchange for a 16-year prison sentence. Schaffer was sentenced in June.

Foster, who is cooperating with the state, remains incarcerated and is unable to resolve her case until Brown's case has been resolved. The prosecutor said during Foster's routine court appearance Monday that he needs to review the transcripts from the Schaffer trial before he can bring Brown to Connecticut for trial. Narducci said that under the Interstate Agreement on Detainers Act, or IAD, he has a limited time to try the case once Brown is brought to Connecticut.

Public records indicate Brown is being held at a federal prison in Elkton, Ohio, and is expected to be complete his sentence in August 2021.
