Groton approves coastal site plan review for Pfizer

Groton — The City of Groton Planning and Zoning Commission this week approved a coastal site plan review for Pfizer Inc. to clear the way for the pharmaceutical company's application of a demolition permit at their former research headquarters off Eastern Point Road.

The commission acted on the review Tuesday, said City Planner Barbara Goodrich. The plan was needed because a portion of Pfizer's nearly 1-million square-foot complex under consideration for demolition falls within 1,000 feet of the banks of the Thames.

Pfizer has announced they plan to apply for a demolition permit while they market the property to potential buyers. A demolition permit was not on file as of Friday. The town would lose $2 million in taxes if the complex of buildings was taken off the tax rolls.

The Building 118 complex is worth $123.7 million, according to town records.
