State police suspect foul play in Bozrah death

Bozrah — State police said Tuesday afternoon they believe foul play was involved in the death of a person found earlier that day at Ray Hayward Memorial Field on Route 163.

State police were at the scene Tuesday conducting a criminal investigation and interviewing potential witnesses. Police have not called the death a homicide.

Troopers and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene after receiving a call at 7:15 a.m. reporting an adult male lying in the field. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Further details regarding the condition of the body were not disclosed.

Police said they have tentatively identified the victim but are withholding that information until next of kin are notified and a positive identification is made.

Investigators do believe the victim was from the Norwich/Groton area.

Anyone who passed through the area between 9 p.m. Monday and 2 a.m. Tuesday is asked to call state police at (860) 537-7500.

"No matter how insignificant it may appear, it may be important to the investigation," state police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said.

State police said the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct a post-mortem examination to determine the cause and manner of death.
