Motion Picture Association investigators bust Westerly man for alleged illegal taping

Stonington — A Westerly man turned himself into police Sunday after they obtained an arrest warrant charging him with illegally taping a showing of the hit movie “Ted” at the Regal Stonington Cinemas 10 in Pawcatuck.

Erwuin O. Alarcon, 21, of 78 Oak St. Apt. 2, was charged with unlawful use of recording device in a motion picture theater. He faces up to six months in prison and $1,000 fine.
Police said that on July 2, investigators from the Motion Picture Association of America were in the theater and spotted Alarcon using a handheld device to record the movie.

They reported the incident to theater staff who called police who then interviewed Alarcon. Police further investigated the incident and applied for an arrest warrant.

The incident was the second time in a two-month span in which police say a patron tried to illegally record a movie at the theater.  In May, police charged a Boston woman with holding her iPhone up to the screen to record a movie.
