    Submarine officers visit namesake cities

    Groton - The commanding officers and sailors from two local submarines are visiting their namesake cities Oct. 4 to 9.

    Cmdr. Chris Williams, commanding officer of the USS Springfield and several sailors are in Springfield while Cmdr. Mike Savageaux, commanding officer of the USS Pittsburgh, and several sailors are in Pittsburgh.

    Williams and his crew planned to meet with the mayor of Springfield, submarine veterans and members of the American Legion, as well as tour a variety of Abraham Lincoln museums and memorial sites.

    Savageaux and his crew planned to visit with students in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps at several universities and a high school, attend a groundbreaking of a Reserve Center, meet with Navy League members and participate in activities before the start of the Pittsburgh Steelers game.

    "It means a lot for us to be able to show our thanks to the city that provides us so much support," Savageaux said.
