VFW post ‘adopts’ National Guard unit

Mystic - The Hugo A. Simonelli Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3263 and Ladies Auxiliary has "adopted" the Connecticut National Guard 1109th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group.

The Adopt-A-Unit is a national VFW program. In July the post and auxiliary hosted a send-off picnic for the soldiers who were deploying to Afghanistan and their families. Each soldier was given a phone card courtesy of Operation Uplink Free Call Days. The post plans to send 85 dozen cookies to the soldiers overseas.

The Men's Auxiliary will be cooking a chicken barbecue dinner on Oct. 13. Call the post at (860) 536-3682 for tickets and more information. The public is invited to attend the fundraiser. The Ladies Auxiliary is also hosting a basket raffle on Oct. 19. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The post banquet hall is available for rent. The post is a non-smoking facility. The post invites the public to visit the post. Visitors do not need to be veterans.
