Margaret Scherm Benton, 81, died suddenly at her home at Evergreen Woods in North Branford on Oct. 3. She the wife of 42 years to the late Roger W. Benton, who predeceased her in 2005. Peg was born on April 26, 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio, daughter of the late Albert E. Scherm and Ella Scherm. She was raised in Bronxville, New York, and attended Emma Willard School and Wheaton College. She obtained her nursing degree from Yale University and was the director of the North Haven-Hamden Regional Visiting Nurse Association for many years.
Peg was an avid knitter, making hundreds of sweaters and pairs of mittens, which she loved to give to family and friends. She also loved traveling to Maine every summer and was passionate about her Maine coon cats.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Schaefer and her husband Michael of Dayville and Ellen Fales and her husband Andrew of West Kingston, Rhode Island. In addition, she is survived by two nieces, Molly Scherm and Ann Baldwin; two nephews, Christopher Scherm and Casey Scherm; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Oct. 6 at the First Congregational Church, followed by burial in Alder Brook Cemetery. The Hawley Lincoln Memorial, Guilford, is in charge of arrangements.
