Groton — A plumber sustained minor burns to his hands in a fire Tuesday afternoon in the bathroom of an unoccupied residence at Ledgewood Condominiums.

City of Groton Fire Chief Nick DeLia said firefighters responded at 12:20 p.m. to reports of fire inside the wall of 294 Meridian St., unit D, where the plumber was working.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the eaves of the building. They were able to stop the fire before it reached the attic, DeLia said. Besides unit D, DeLia said, the adjoining unit C sustained damage from the effort to rip away the wall to get at the fire. The residents of unit C were displaced for the night.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.

DeLia said arriving firefighters called for a first alarm, bringing in mutual aid from the Poquonnock Bridge, Sub Base, Old Mystic, Electric Boat and Center Groton departments.
