Musical Masterworks begins its new season

    Pianist Jeewon Park

The Musical Masterworks chamber music series in Old Lyme opens it 10-concert season with a musical arc from the very beginning to today. Last season, Masterworks Artistic Director (and resident cellist) Edward Arron happily opened with some music by "Papa" Haydn, the father of the art form.

"If Haydn has to move over for anyone, who else but Bach?" says Arron.

The program for Saturday and Sunday opens with Bach's hypnotic Trio Sonata from "The Musical Offering," then jumps forward 250 years for Schnittke's neo-Baroque "Musica Nostalgica" for Cello and Piano. Then we swing to Paris of 1937 for Martinu's Trio for Flute, Violin and Piano before returning home to one of the enduring bedrock's of the chamber music reperoire: Ravel's Piano Trio.

Then comes a dash of spice in the 2007 Velocity for Flute and Piano by Kenji Bunch, a composer and violist who has appeared at Masterworks several times, including to peform his own fine music.

The lineup of musicians will be flutist Tara Helen O'Connor, pianist Jeewon Park, violinist Steven Copes, violin, and cellist Arron.

From Bach to Schnittke to Bunch .... what fun!
