Local roundup: Old Lyme boys upset No. 2 Hand 1-0

Madison - Old Lyme High School paid dearly for its inconsistent play earlier this week when it failed to qualify for the Shoreline Conference boys' soccer tournament.

But the Wildcats more than made up for it Friday when George Logan scored with seven minutes remaining to give Old Lyme a stunning 1-0 victory over Daniel Hand, the second-ranked team in the Class LL/L state coaches' poll.

"It really gave us affirmation as to what we're capbable of," Old Lyme coach Marc Vendetti said. "We've been up and down, a little inconsistent, so this is redeeming on several levels.

"Our objective was to go out and compete really, really hard for 80 minutes, and we went in and played extremely well ... I don't feel like we stole one from them. We earned it. It was a just result for sure."

Logan's goal came when Alex Clippinger beat a Hand defender wide of the goal and found Logan right at the top of the penalty. He took one touch, cut back and beat Hand goalie Greg Sydor with a perfect shot.

"George put it exactly where the keeper couldn't get it," Vendetti said.

Hand (12-3-1), which was ranked No. 1 in the state most of the season before losing to Fairfield Prep and Xavier late in the year, held a slim 11-10 edge in shots, but goalie Spencer Saunders made eight saves for the Wildcats (10-5-1).

In other games:

• Undefeated Bacon Academy scored a goal in each half to defeat Waterford 2-0 in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division. Trevor Bis and Chad Ferro each scored for the Bobcats (15-0, 10-0). Elliot Diana had 17 saves for the Lancers (12-3-1, 6-3-1).

H.S. girls' soccer

• Lexi Sibley scored once in each half, lifting Old Lyme to a 3-0 win over Cromwell in a Shoreline Conference game. Hannah Behringer also scored, Hannah O'Brien and Sloane Sweitzer had assists and Tori Sims made one save for Old Lyme, which finishes the regular season at 12-3-1, 9-1-1. Old Lyme hosts Haddam-Killingworth in a Shoreline tournament semifinal next Wednesday.

• Grasso Tech closed out its season with a 7-1 loss at Hartford Classical in a Constitution State Conference game. Kedy Rodriguez scored a goal and Amber Maher and Casey Mercado made three saves each for Grasso (2-13).

H.S. volleyball

• Old Lyme beat North Branford in the Shoreline Conference 25-12, 25-19, 28-26. Amanda Burke had eight kills, Nora Syed had eight digs, Lindsey Knepshield had five aces and Paige Palenski had nine assists for Old Lyme.

• East Lyme beat Newtown 25-18, 25-11, 25-16. Devin Perez had six kills and four blocks, Jill Bartlett had 26 assists and Kiki Ryan had 15 digs for East Lyme, which ends the regular season at 16-2.

H.S. field hockey

• Libby Morrison had two goals and two assists to help lead Stonington past Norwich Free Academy, 4-1, in the ECC. Molly Crowley added two goals and an assist for the Bears (11-3, 10-1) while Hannah Long scored for NFA (8-6, 6-5).

• Julia Peay, Nicole McComic and Chelsea Feliciano each scored goals in Waterford's 3-0 win over Windham in the ECC. Goalie Becca Gregoire had two saves for the Lancers (8-5-1, 6-4-1).

College volleyball

• Connecticut College beat Hamilton College 3-0 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Camels (20-2, 8-2), ranked first in New England Division III, own a 10-match winning streak. Senior Rachel Schroff had 12 kills, eight digs and five assists while senior Katie Ketcham had 33 assists and nine digs and senior Carly Guiducci added 16 digs.

Schedule changes

• The CIAC will allow teams to make adjustments in their schedules due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Sandy early next week, including the scheduling of games on Sunday if both schools agree.

As a result, two field hockey games involving local schools have moved their games from Monday to Sunday. East Lyme will play Fitch at the Mystic Education Center on Sunday at 1 p.m., while Stonington will play host to Haddam-Killingworth on Sunday at 2 p.m.
