Man charged with assaulting woman for hours

    William Diaz

New London — Police arrested a man Thursday who they said repeatedly assaulted a woman before fleeing the scene.

William Diaz, 44, of no certain address, was charged with violation of a protective order, third-degree assault, second-degree burglary, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree strangulation and third-degree criminal mischief.

Police said they responded to 44 Franklin St. at 5:35 p.m. for a report of a domestic dispute.

Upon arrival, police found an open, unsecured apartment. At the time, they thought an abduction had taken place. Police, however, were able to find the 42-year-old victim a short time later.

The victim said Diaz had unlawfully entered her apartment and began to assault her over a period of several hours and fled the scene prior to the police's arrival.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Diaz was found nearby walking on the street and was arrested. Police discovered he had an outstanding warrant for an Oct. 19 incident that charges him with violation of a protective order and interfering with an officer.
