UConn women could be the new No. 1 with a win

UConn is deep in the heart of Texas - is that what you call College Station? - and suddenly the Huskies are in position to become the No. 1 team in women's basketball again.

Thanks to No. 4 Stanford's 71-69 upset win over No. 1 Baylor on Friday in Hawaii, a loss that ended the reigning national champion's 42-game winning streak, No. 2 UConn has an opportunity to replace the Bears atop the national polls today if it can beat No. 16 Texas A&M today (2:30 p.m. ESPN2) at Reed Arena.

The Aggies, however, are no pushovers. Texas A&M is only two years removed from winning its own national title (2011) and is desperate for a an early-season victory after opening the year with tough losses to No. 8 Louisville (47-45) and No. 9 Penn State (63-58).

The Huskies, meanwhile, are coming off an easy 103-39 dismantling of College of Charleston, but are playing on the road for the first time, something that always concerns coach Geno Auriemma - especially when three of his best players are freshmen.

But Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson have hardly played like freshmen so far. The 6-foot-4 Stewart, last year's national high school player of the year, scored 21 points in her debut while Tuck added 15 off the bench and Jefferson had four points and five assists.

Stewart joins a veteran cast of seniors Caroline Doty and Kelly Faris, junior Stefanie Dolson and sophomore Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis in the starting lineup while Tuck, Jefferson and sophomore Brianna Banks are the first players off the bench.

The Huskies are expected to play their second straight game without starting point guard Bria Hartley, who has been sidelined with a sprained ankle.
