New London — City firefighters quickly extinguished a fire around 10:30 this morning at 139 Squire St.

Battalion Chief Keith Nichols said when fire crews arrived there was smoke and fire coming from the front of the house in the area of an electrical panel. He said the fire was quickly knocked down. Firefighters cut through the wall just to make sure that the fire did not extend.

Nichols said the home was occupied at the time. The American Red Cross was called in to assist because power to the house had to be shut down.

The Submarine FAST team also responded. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
