Braves trade Hanson to Angels for Walden

The Braves traded Tommy Hanson to the Los Angeles Angels for former closer Jordan Walden on Friday, clearing a spot in the Atlanta rotation for Julio Teheran, Randal Delgado or another young starter.

Hanson has seen a decrease in his velocity as he battled rotator cuff tendinitis in 2011 and a lower back strain in 2012.

Hanson was 13-10 this year, setting a career high in wins, but his ERA climbed for the third straight season to a career-worst 4.48. The right-hander was 45-32 with the Braves.

Walden had 32 saves in 2011, then lost his closer's role to Ernesto Frieri and was 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA and one save this year. He became superfluous when the Angels agreed this week to a $3.5 million, one-year contract with Ryan Madson.

The Braves on Friday declined to tender 2013 contract offer to two former prominent members of their staff, right-handed pitchers Jair Jurrjens and Peter Moylan.

Red Sox don't tender contracts to 3 players

The Boston Red Sox declined to tender 2013 contracts to right-hander Scott Atchison, left-hander Rich Hill and outfielder Ryan Sweeney, making them eligible for free agency.

The team also announced Friday that it had tendered contracts to the other 30 unsigned players on the major league roster.

Atchison was 2-1 with a 1.58 ERA in 42 games last season, all in relief. Hill made 25 relief appearances for the Red Sox, going 1-0 with a 1.83 ERA. Sweeney hit .260 with no homers and 16 RBIs in 63 games and was on the disabled list three times.

Perfect game pitcher Humber joins Astros

The Houston Astros have claimed Philip Humber off waivers from the Chicago White Sox and agreed to a one-year contract with the pitcher who threw a perfect game last season.

The 29-year-old Humber pitched a perfect game in a 4-0 win over the Seattle Mariners last April 21. It was the highlight of a 5-5 season in which the right-hander made 26 appearances, 16 of them starts.

AP: Ramirez positive test for testosterone

The substance that caused Manny Ramirez to test positive for a banned substance last year was testosterone, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

The administrator of baseball's drug program issued his annual report on Friday. The document lists the substances that resulted in seven positive tests for performance-enhancing drugs that led to discipline.

Six players were suspended earlier this year for taking prohibited substances and, in each case, the substance that triggered the positive test was announced under a change to baseball's drug agreement.

However, one positive test was unaccounted for and it came from Ramirez, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because that detail wasn't included in the report.

Ramirez, then playing for Tampa Bay, at first retired in April 2011 rather than face a 100-game suspension for his second failed drug test.

Ramirez, 14th on the career list with 555 home runs, was suspended for 50 games in 2009 while playing with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Martin finalizes $17M, 2-year deal with Pirates

Russell Martin is going from a franchise that has won a record 27 World Series titles to a franchise that has endured a record 20 consecutive losing seasons.

Yet Martin, a catcher, said Friday he is excited about joining the Pittsburgh Pirates after finalizing a $17 million, two-year contract as a free agent. Martin spent the last two seasons with the New York Yankees.

"It's going to be different," Martin said. "It's going to be a challenge but I think the Pirates have a young and electric club. There is a lot of talent there and I don't think we're as far away as winning as maybe people outside baseball think we are."

Martin, 29, hit a career-low .211 last season for the Yankees but also finished with a career-best 21 home runs.

Mets decline offers to Torres, Pelfrey, Acosta

The Mets declined to offer contracts to outfielder Andres Torres, right-hander Mike Pelfrey and right-handed reliever Manny Acosta. The three players will become free agents today.

The switch-hitting Torres hit .239 with 15 homers and 57 RBIs this season for New York. Pelfrey, who has spent parts of seven seasons with New York, appeared in only three games this year before having season-ending Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow. He has a career ERA of 4.36 with slightly more than 500 strikeouts in about 900 innings.
