    Local colleges: Avery Point women rout MCC

    Groton - UConn-Avery Point placed four players in double figures en route to a 62-35 women's basketball victory over Manchester Community College on Monday night.

    Kim Bouten led the Pointers (6-3), who led 29-15 at halftime, with 14 points while Haley Cooper, Jackie Riera and Mikayla Wells each added 12 points.

    College honors

    • Connecticut College junior Matt Vadas was named New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week in men's basketball.

    Vadas averaged 27.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game in a 1-2 week for the Camels, shooting 55 percent from the floor (27 for 49) and 52 percent from 3-point range (13-for-25).

    • Conn College sophomore goalie Kelsie Fralick was named NESCAC Player of the Week in women's hockey. Fralick made 50 saves during a 1-0 shutout of Hamilton, which came in averaging 4.6 goals a game.

    • Ledyard graduate Fred Hewett, a junior at Eastern Connecticut State, was named Little East Athlete of the Week in men's track and field. Hewett, competing in his first meet of the winter (UMass-Boston Invite) qualified for the New England Division III Champioinships in the 400 (51.07) and 60 dash (7.20), winning the 400.
