New London - Tara Gabelman and Caitlin Cimino had 17 points and nine rebounds each as they led the Connecticut College women's basketblal team to a 54-43 win over Coast Guard in a nonleague women's basketball game Sunday at Coast Guard.
Conn (5-4), which won its third straight, used a 15-1 run in the first half turning a 4-3 deficit into a 18-5 lead with 10:15 left. Conn led 28-16 late in the first half before Coast Guard freshman Meghan Fornaro hit a 3-pointer and then had a steal and layup with 24 seconds left to cut the Bears deficit to 28-21 at halftime.
Coast Guard started the second half on a 7-2 spurt to close to within 30-28 with 13:54 left. Conn took control of the game using an 11-2 spurt turning a 32-30 edge into a 43-32 lead with 8:02 remaining in the game.
Meghan Fornaro led Coast Guard (4-5) with 16 points while Larla Brown tied her season-high with 12 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Dani Knox also had seven rebounds for the Bears.
• Amelia Dineen scored two goals and had two assists, leading Connecticut College to it's second victory over Neumann in as many days, winning 6-2 Sunday. Ariel DiPasquale and Courtney Dumont had a goal and an assist each, Keira St-Laurent had two assists and Amy Leichliter made 20 saves for Conn (4-3-1).
Conn beat Neumann 3-0 Saturday. Sam Schoeneberger scored twice and Leah Kallen also scored for the Camels. Kelsie Fralick made 13 saves and Molly Murphy, Amanda Bogue, Julia Rodricks and Olivia Farell had assists for Conn.
• New London's Lee Cattanach broke the Eastern Connecticut State record in the 3000 meters Saturday at the Yale Invitational. Cattanach, a Williams School graduate, finished third with in a time of 9:03.65, breaking Pat Denman's 10-year old mark with four seconds.
New London's Fredrick Hewett, the former Ledyard High standout, qualified for the New England Div. III meet in the 200 with a time of 22.85, good for eighth place. Hewett has already qualified in the in the 60 and 400.
