    Lieberman establishes scholarship fund

Hartford - Outgoing U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, D-Conn., is establishing a scholarship fund for high school students who show an interest in public service.

Lieberman stopped at the state Capitol Monday to announce the scholarship, which each year will award $1,500 toward college for five Connecticut students to be renewed up to three additional years with the first recipients to be announced in June. Hesaid he will start with a few $100,000 in campaign funds and plans to do more fundraising to bring the total to $1 million to feed the Joe Lieberman Connecticut Scholarship program. He said he hoped the awards will help the students to get more aid for college. In addition to high academic achievement, Lieberman said those chosen must show leadership potential and have participated in community service.
