EL students 'fill the bus' for Sandy victims

Published December 14. 2012 4:00AM

East Lyme - The high school boys lacrosse team is running a "Fill the Bus" initiative to collect donations for Superstorm Sandy victims in New York City.

The drive is collecting donations including paper plates and goods, plastic utensils, nonperishable foods, blankets, pet food and warm clothes.

High school English teacher Jeff Beale will drive the bus to New York on Saturday to deliver the items to Astoria Recovers, a community site collecting donations for hurricane victims in that New York City neighborhood.

Mitchell Andres, the high school senior that is organizing the drive, said he heard about similar drives that radio stations and football teams at other schools were hosting and wanted to get his high school involved.

The Middle School is also helping to collect items for the effort. "I just thought if I could get as much of the East Lyme community together as I could, it would help out," Andres said.

It's disgusting. A proud basketball tradition was squandered for mediocre football and television contracts.
It's not ideal but it had to happen. The money is in football and teams like UConn and Syracuse needed to adapt.
I think we waste our time and energy focusing on sports. Aren't there bigger problems in the world?
