What started out a small fundraiser has become a big derby deal. Originally, the Green and White scrimmage for Sandy Hook was a simple fundraiser put together by Connecticut Roller Girls, Shoreline Roller Derby and Galaxy Roller Rink. Skaters from both leagues would mix up and play each other and hopefully skaters from nearby leagues Hartford Area Roller Derby, Providence Roller Derby and Worcester Roller Derby would join in the fun for the cause.
Once word of the event traveled through the derbysphere, SLRD and CTRG were flooded with emails. Not only from skaters, but from referees, non-skating officials, announcers, EMT’s and others interested in helping out. There was even interest in having male skaters from MRDA leagues participate, and now the list of skaters has exploded to 100 skaters, all wanting to help raise money towards the cause of the survivors of the Newtown shootings.
This event will be unique, not only because one of the scrimmages will be co-ed, but because it’s a chance for outsiders to see “derby love” in action. Participants’ from Providence Roller Derby, Hartford Area Roller Derby, Worcester Roller Derby, Central New York Roller Derby, Hellions of Troy, Pioneer Valley Roller Derby, Suburbia Roller Derby, Gotham Girls Roller Derby, Mass Attack Roller Derby, Death Quads, Quadfathers, New York Shock Exchange and Mass Maelstrom will be joining CTRG and SLRD in the multi-level goodwill scrimmages.
This fundraising event will be on January 19th and open to the public at Galaxy Roller Rink. Entry is free, with a suggested donation of $5 per person, kids 10 and under get in for free if they are accompanied by a paying adult. There will be a moment of silence, National Anthem and then the usual derby action.
All money raised from the scrimmage, bake sale and 50/50 raffle will go toward the Sandy Hook School Support Fund set up at Newtown Savings Bank by the United Way of Western Connecticut. The door opens at 4:30 PM with the starting whistle at 5 PM. Email email@example.com with further questions. We hope to see you at the Scrimmage for Sandy Hook.
